THE REVIEW

What I thought: Ok, so I will do this review en masse rather than the episodes individually, with this being written a good few weeks since I listened to this (and a LOT has happened in these two weeks) so these episodes somewhat bleed into each other to be honest. Anyway, overall I liked this boxset, it turns some of the narrative from previous boxsets around, specifically around Raven and who her real masters are (turns out it isnt the Timelords). I found all this Kipper stuff a bit silly in the previous boxset (I did enjoy the previous stories overall though). The exploration of the Kippers in this one does make sense more thanks to these stories, and the connection they have with the Daleks (the idea of the potential Daleks is very cool).

Michael Troughton is great as the 2nd Doctor and in these episodes we get the classic 2nd Doctor TARDIS team, an older Jaimie and Zoe, complementing the 2nd Doctor perfectly. The settings for the episodes are interesting, with a return to a version of Skaro, with alternative type Thals who are not initially what they seem. The final episode, with the returned emperor Dalek going fully mental is great fun, with some of the Time Lords’ abilities in this version, is a worthy villain for this Doctor. The whole Mori stuff lost me, I will not lie, but I didn’t get too stressed about it and just enjoyed the ride.

Rating: 3 out of 5 time corridors: Solid fun listen, great to be back with the 2nd Doctor, shame we dont get more of this Doctor at BF

What I felt: somewhat weary by the end, possibly a little long to sustain my attention but overall good fun.

What am I left thinking/feeling/wanting?

  • I am a little bored of the Daleks to be honest, it would be nice if BF do something a little more innovative with the 2nd Doctor, rather than these pretty nostalgia driven episodes (IMHO).
  • Not sure i fully understood all this Morai stuff

Memorable bits

  • All the 2nd doctor scenes were great fun
  • The return of Zoe and Jaimie as the TARDIS team is great, older Zoe in particular is great
  • Raven is an interesting character (although I did find her accent a bit annoying and dull)
