THE REVIEW

What I thought: it is not entirely clear to me why this 8th box set has been released so close to the last one (Audacity and Charlie set) and although I am pleased to be back in Helen and Liv’s company I struggled to both place this in my head cannon for the 8th doctor, and remember what was going on last time these three were together. Moving on from this schedule issue, I put this aside whilst listening and I enjoyed both of these stories quite a lot (Zygons are always good IMHO).

Eos falling is an interesting one, some nice stuff in the TARDIS and lots of introspection/pretty deep and meaningful discussions between Helen and Liv, some of this was lost on me though due to the reasons above. Nonetheless it’s a nice story, especially the notion of spaceship ‘ambulance’ hunters. I was more at home however with Lure of the Zygons, with our headline monsters on good form as always and I enjoyed the gambit presented here, with the Zygon ship luring in unsuspecting rescuers. As the second episode got underway I started to get my head around what was going on, with some really great stuff here i.e. the zygon ‘younglings’ scuttling about; the zygon ‘wren’ and the way the doctor tricks them into trying to assimilate/copy the TARDIS, creating their own destruction due to the inability to copy the Doctors infinite ship.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 nodules: I am not going to lie, I was and remain pretty confused around the plot of these episodes as well as the deeper meaning for these two companions. I suppose I thought their story was told. Nonetheless I particularly enjoyed the Zygons return. I LOVE the analogies with AI and the Zygons copy abilities not being quite right, as well as the non-binary Wren and the acceptance of this in a completely undramatic way, imagine living in a world like that! Thanks for keeping this progressive, kind and compassionate flag flying big finish!

What am I left thinking/feeling/wanting?

  • What the conclusion for these companions will actually end up being?
  • Where this all fits? May have to watch some review on YouTube to understand fully what happened in this one and the importance of the adventure in relation to Liv and Helen
  • A re-listen of this one is on the cards I think

Memorable bits

  • Zygon babies
  • Victoria’s dresses in the Tardis
  • A very clever trick of the 8th Doctors at the end of the Zygon episode
