Doctor Who: The Third Doctor Adventures: Operation Vengeance

I approached this one with some trepidation, starting such a long story; however, a long journey up north was perfect for this. I could listen to the whole thing in two parts, perfect company for my trip up and down the M6.

THE REVIEW

What I thought:

I haven’t really enjoyed the last few Third Doctor adventures, the most recent releases; they have had some great moments, but they felt overindulgent, too long, unnecessarily so. This one, however, I am pleased to report, didn’t feel like that. The length felt needed, allowing the story to develop, all the characters to have their moment, and the threat to build as the story goes on.

It is a great setting, and a great one for a third Doctor story in particular. There are so many good moments throughout the story, with the entwining between a third doctor and Jo adventure with a third doctor, SJ-S and Brig’s adventure. The enemy makes for a strong antagonist and the setting itself is excellent. It is perhaps written with ‘Where Eagles Dare’ etc in mind rather than any kind of accuracy, but I am ok wth that, it’s a third Doctor era story, it can’t be too dark and gritty without being incorrect for the era.

Tim Treloar shines as the third doctor, with Culshaw bringing some real pathos to the Brig, who is a bit of a revelation in this one. SJ-S has also done a good service here by Sadie Miller, and the additional cast make this story come alive, every minute of it felt like a classic 7-part third Doctor Adventure. Well done, all involved, this one is a triumph!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Jerry invasion plans: overall, I don’t have much to say that is less than glowing about this one. All the cast shine and the story is the star; it works really well. Some of the mock nazi/Tommy stuff is a bit on the nose, but gritty realism this wasn’t going for nor should it be.

What I felt: relieved this wasn’t boring, and happily surprised how entertaining this one was—very entertaining and a classic third doctor adventure.

What am I left thinking/feeling/wanting?

  • Much more open to longer classic Doctor stories now after listening to this one
  • More of the Brig and SJ-S please

Memorable bits

  • The Doctor as the Brigs bat-man!
  • Dodgy german accents
