Context: I love the cover for this one, very much enjoyed the last two in this sub-set of dark Gallifrey (confused though I was at points in those first two adventures), so looked forward to listening to the conclusion of this mini-epic and hoped to get a good conclusion/the mist of confusion lifting for me on this one.

THE REVIEW

What I thought: I thought this one was amazing, completely blown away! It brought together all the threads of the previous two stories, which is no mean feat considering the complexity, twists and turns of the previous episodes. Now, after listening to this one, the whole thing makes perfect sense. The magnificent and horribly ruthless plot of the master fits perfectly with this incarnation, the most straightforwardly murderous version of the Master for me. There are also so many cool moments in this story, not exclusive to the return of the 8th Doctor, cool though that is (this Master’s prime Doctor antagonist). All the stuff with Mother Quiver is so awesome, and is turned on its head by the fact that this isn’t really a story about some weird Timelord affliction, which turns out to be a simple master/hypnosis con, an unexpected hypnosis twist, I must say.

The fight with the 8th Doctor is fantastic, and the way the Master treats Olzel is exactly what this version of the Master would do, horrific but amazing! What a story, and a fantastic duel between the Master and the 8th Doctor to conclude this excellent story.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 psychic trees: fantastic in every regard, I really wish I had waited and listened to all three of these like a box set, I think I would have got more out of the 1st and 2nd episode if i had listened to these three stories back to back (to note for future BF series like this…maybe for the next trilogy of Dark Gallifrey?). For me, this has been the best trilogy of Dark Gallifrey thus far.
