Context: I purchased this on Vinyl and decided to treat myself with a listen, it made sense to do so after following my listen of The Dalek Protocol and again in anticipation for the spin off Anya Kingdom boxset (this was a couple of months ago, I am rather late with this wee review).
THE REVIEW
What I thought: this was really really good, I haven’t really listened to much BF 10th Doctor so initially it felt a bit weird/unfamiliar to listen to this incarnation in a BF context, I haven’t even watched any 10th Doctor stuff for ages so took me a while to get my head into this set but once I got going all was well! The return of the ‘Nun’ really surprised me, hugely amusing, and Mark Gatiss is great as creepy X. Very well played, he is such an asset to any story he is in. Once we to get to the interactions between the 10th Doctor, Anya and Mark the whole concept is elevated for me and this rapidly turns into a classic listen, I bloody loved this boxset. The second episode is a little odd but reintroduces Mark Severn in a terribly clever way, and the final episode delves into the Kingdom family, bloody great stuff here and makes Anya such a greatly creation by BF, so well played by Jane Slavin. Marcy is equally as impressive a character, what a great series, bloody great start to this short series run, I wish I had been listening to BF when this originally came out.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Alonso’s: bloody great, starts slow but builds fast and doesn’t let go for all three episodes, so much fun. Tennat and all the cast on great form.
What I felt: very very happy listen, brilliant!
What am I left thinking?
- Where this goes next?
- Can we always have Anya and Mark in new adventures please
- Will we ever get Tennat back to BF??
Memorable bits
- The Nun!
- A very creepy house in Episode 2
- Delving into the history of the Kingdoms, and Anya realising that the Doctor knew Brett and Sarah…very cool
