Context: I don’t have a problem with the recasts at BF so I was intrigued by the notion of a Harry and Sarah-Jane spin off (plus K9!). Again, have to subdue my dissapointment this wasnt a physical release, embrace the download, and enjoy a new series (I hope it becomes an ongoing series anyway).

Episodes
 1. The Caller by Tim Foley

2. Union of the Snake by Roland Moore

3. Blood Type by Simon Guerrier

THE REVIEW

What I thought: a very good start to this new series, the combination of Harry, Sarah-Jane and K9 is simply perfect and feels like they have always been a trio that go on solo, Timelord free, adventures. The team just fit together and work togehter so naturally, it is a match made in heaven. The first episode is great fun, getting our team up and running, with the lovely addition of Aunt Petunia. It’s a solid, familiar and great fun adventure (a theme that runs throughout these three episodes). The adventure centres around an alien that lives in the phones, great concept and very 80’s vibes here.

The second episode is slightly higher stakes, with our heros now firmly working together again. K9 is bloody brilliant in this episode, and hilarious. I have written elsewhere how much he is growing on me, what a fantastic character. The adventure/story is great and leads to a strong and somewhat emotional ending, with Chen throwing himself into an alien portal in order to find his son, strong stuff.

The final episode is very clever, amalgymating three adventures into one narrative, showing the ongoing and crazy adventures of the team. I love S-J’s editor (Brenda G), likley to be a recurring character I am sure and the alien hair dresser is cool. In the interviews at the end of the third episode the team up/boxset is compared to a comforting cup of tea and biscuit, which perfectly captures the ethos of this series. I hope this series does well and they make loads of them!

Rating: 4.5 out of Cyber Guns: I LOVED this, far more than I expected (I thought this would be solid however I think this is better than that, a distinct vibe here, great addition to the BF roster of Dr Who spin offs), brilliant characters, great stories..I hope thay have plans on making loads of these.

What I felt: like I’m in a big armchair, favourite mug, and a massive slice of cake…great listen.

What am I left thinking?

  • Where next for our intrepid team?
  • Will our fav timelord ever show up?
  • Please more Annete badland as aunt Petunia!

Memorable bits

  • Got to be Delboy K9
  • Baby food made from Aliens
  • The sound of the 1980’s Cybergun, classic!
