1.1 The Voord in London by LR Hay
1.2 The Thal from G.R.A.C.E. by Felicia Barker
1.3 Allegiance by Angus Dunican
Context: I confess I initially wasn’t going to get this one as it was download only, as an avid collector I like the physical media, however I had a word with myself and thought, screw it I really fancied this so gave it a go (the cover is brilliant). I had also just listened to Dalek Universe 1-3 (and the Dalek Protocol with Tom B), so I am loving the thought of spending some more time with Mark VII and Agent Kingdom!
THE REVIEW
What I thought: I really enjoyed this. Very enjoyable, nice use of the Voord and the context of 60’s England and Mark in his mini-sub in the river Thames, radioing all his 60’s lingo is most amusing. Great first episode. The second episode is darker, with messed up Thal scientists, evocative space drama, nice work on this one from the writers. The adventure across all three episodes is strong, lots of cool Terry Nation-esque touches to each story, the music hits this theme very well indeed and the acting is great, I bloody love Mark IV, and Anya is great as well. I am intrigued where all of this will go. The whole Thal experimental station in episode 2 is a great idea, and I liked the character of Sola as well, I am sure we will see her again soon. Lots of good stuff in all the episodes in fact.
I listened to this a while ago, so the details are somewhat shaky as I have hit the BF listens pretty hard since but this was a solid listen, all three episodes are strong and I enjoyed this a lot, well recommended and it will be intriguing to see what the plans for his are going forward.
Rating: 3.8 out of 5 Nylons: very promising start, these are engaging, exciting and at times pretty amusing stories. Very much looking forward to following this crew for the future.
What I felt:
What am I left thinking?
- Where this series will go next?
- Any more 60’s monsters planned to appear?
Memorable bits
- The VOORD in the thames is pretty cool image in my head
- Pretty much anything with Marc IV is super cool
- Love the potential of the final episode and where we might go next
