Context: I clearly lost my mind and introduced yet another series to my regular BF listens but I was at a loose end, had failed to download the latest release and with no signal I went crazy, downloaded the boxset and samshed through this one on a commute to work and a couple of walks… will try to introduce UNIT to my rotation but could be tricky!

This blog post is very brief, even for me; however, I am a little behind with my posts, as I have many new listens!

1.2 Earthfall by Andrew Smith

THE REVIEW

What I thought:

Despite my ethusiasm on starting this one I wasn’t quite mentally ready to start a new series so it took me a while to get my head around this, the style, tone etc. However once I was a wee bit into the first episode I got into the rythm of this and started to really enjoy being in the company of Kate, Osgood and the UNIT team. I also really enjoyed the content/episode arc, with the Autons and their Nestene controller in full invasion mode. Each episode goes along at a fair speed, with lots of action, with perhaps at times a bit too much going on for my small brain to handle. Its pretty clear by the end though what has been going on and as such I was very much enjoying this one by the end of the final episode.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Tentacles – very solid and thrilling set of adventures, Kate and the UNIT team hit the ground running, Autons do their plastic-shennigan thing and its all brilliant fun. Feels like a set of third doctor adventures in some respects, and I think to some extent that was the plan when this first UNIT boxset was planned. Great stuff, i look forward to seeing how these develop (the boxset covers tantalise some great new series monster mayhen to come).

What I felt:

A little overwhelmed to be at the start of a long series of distinct WHO-related adventures.

What am I left thinking?

  • Where this all goes? It’s all about invasions, and I can see far more Who villains are on their way
  • I don’t have much to say here right now as this was pretty much exactly what I was expecting…I am looking forward to hearing the next one!

Memorable bits

  • The Mongolian cavalry charge was quite impressive.
  • Anything with an AUTON in is memorable to me, what great villains/monsters
  • Osgood is a great character, lots of mileage in exploring her background, skills etc etc
