Chapter Three: Yesterday is Tomorrow and Tomorrow is Today

Context: I bloody loved the previous war doctor rises set so was hoping for something epic for the next one, however I went into this knowing this was slightly different from the previous space opera/Star Wars vibe for the last one…..nonetheless I have always loved the war doctor range so very much looking forward to this one as I started it, love Charley’s portrayal of this unique incarnation.

THE REVIEW

What I thought: certainly very different from the previous boxset, not necessarily a bad thing, very inventive to have the war doctor as Wyatt, and the shenanigans that ensue. I like Christopher Naylor’s sort of alternative Brig, and the whole sort of alternative UNIT set up was great fun. Shock regeneration at the end of episode 2, and lots of time war/time lord shenanigans. The concept is well executed, Daisy Ashford is great in her non-Liz role and the whole set up makes for three very entertaining episodes. (It’s was a bit timey-wimey for me at times but not too problematic). I did get a little lost at the end however that is more a concentration issue on my part rather than any weakness in that final episode.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Daleks – I enjoyed this one very much, less epic than the last boxset however its still very strong, and somewhat a step outside of the time war, at least for a while. There is some strong stuff/insights into the war doctors thoughts about the doctor, and the difference between the doctor and the war doctor, lots more of this please!

What I felt: engaged and happy to be back on this journey with the War Doctor. Strong performances all round, great music. Love it. (Also nice to have a break from the Daleks).

What am I left thinking?

  • How the war doctor gets back to kicking Dalek ass
  • Will we ever see Wyatt and his mates again (I suspect not but you never know)
  • Will we back in epic territory for the next boxset?

Memorable bits

  • The surprise regeneration cliffhanger.
  • The war doctor pleading not to go back to being the doctor (and his reasoning for this is fascinating).
  • Not Liz is great all the way through these!
