Context: I have only listened to a couple of companion chronicles so I have no history with this range, although the two I did listen to were good fun. So, I came to this set with no expectations and lots of interest. The companion chronicles is another range I want to start getting into to, I may need to go part-time at work to fit all this in!
THE REVIEW
What I thought: whilst I was listening to these episodes I enjoyed them, but I wouldn’t say I was blown away initially. However, know I am reflecting on all of them after the fact they are coming back to me in a vivid, meaningful series of episodes that are deep in emotion and exploration of those early companions and the 1st Doctor himself. Susan has some amazing things to say here about letting the grief of losing Alex go, the depth of those scenes were simply heartbreaking. There is the Doctor himself and the reflections on what makes up family, and it was a lovely treat for me to have Noonan’s 1st Doctor appear properly in the final two episodes. The White Ship was probably my favourite of the four, as I love/am a sucker for historical episodes. The Y factor is the most fun, and with some really interesting insights into Dodo and the role of the companion in a more general sense. A very high quality boxset. Loved it, I really hope they do some more like this.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Priz-Nez – my option of these episodes has grown and grown, they are all brilliant and the depth of story/quality of the acting here are superb. Despite these companions coming from the 60’s these episodes show the depth that these veteran actors still have, and the mileage in these old characters. Great stuff.
What I felt: entertained, surprised and often moved. I am beginning to really enjoy the 60’s TV episodes and now these 60’s TARDISb team audio adventures. Highly recommend.
What am I left thinking?
- Will other recast doctors start appearing in these companion chronicles
- I am very much hoping we get more of these companion sets
Memorable bits
- The Y factor is a very interesting critique/starie on alien gender politics!
- Vikki’s adventure in an exploded TARDIS
- The impending doom of the White Ship
