Context: I had Susans War vol 1 and 2 in the list of ‘to listen to’ for ages, then this one was came along this year so I decided, in a gap in the schedule for my new BF listens, to smash through vol 1 and 2 in order to get this one ready to be listened to..so, I was pleasantly surprised with Vol 1, very much more enjoyed vol 2, due to the 8th doctors presence (the links to remembrance of the Daleks were awesome). So, off I went again into Susans war for this latest release.

THE REVIEW

What I thought: very nice stories, intriguing variety between them and what I particularly liked was the development of Susans character alongside the other timelords, the moving away from the Doctor. Susan is making her own way, and decisions, in relation to the timewar. It’s a Doctor-like approach to the Timewar but where Susan differs is a willingness to be involved.

It’s a little odd I suppose that despite this need to get involved we still know next to nothing about Susans time on Gallifrey, where her other family are etc etc. I completely understand why these things are not explored/included, it’s seriously old school Dr Who mystery but it makes this series a little shallow/odd at times, Susans motivation lacks depth …its a shame BF don’t (can’t maybe?) explore this, however vaguely/in a limited way that may be. None the less, if you take it at face value, this is good fun. Definitely worth a listen.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 War rooms – very solid boxset (is it a boxset?). Two very interesting stories, the last of the Kaleds in particular, a very intriguing listen, with Susan on great form. I think I prefer the previous boxset but it’s a solid continuation of the line.

What I felt: I was entertained by both stories, and enjoyed Susan as opposed to being a bit irritated by her, when she is in ‘early Susan’ mode in particular I find her a bit irritating. War Susan however is pretty cool, I would love if BF would expand further on this version of Susan

What am I left thinking?

  • Are there plans for this series going forward?
  • How far would BF be prepared to go in terms of developing a ‘War Susan’?

Memorable bits

  • Alternate Kaleds and alternate Skaro
  • What is going to happen next!? Will we ever get a regeneration/different incarnation of Susan?? Almost no chance in the immediate future but one day…you never know
