Context: so this is me back to the start of the Torchwood range, which I am working my through as well as from the other ‘end’i.e. new releases. I was initially reluctant to start yet another range to listen to however my philosophy now is that I will listen to it all, eventually. I didn’t dislike Torchwood when it was on the TV, although I don’t know it anywhere near as well as I do Who. Massive overlap though and it’s nice to have a more adult series alongside classic Who and other Who spin offs. And the quality has been excellent…both ends as it were.
THE REVIEW
What I thought: enjoyed this one a decent amount. I remembered who Yvonne was and what her Who episodes were and her eventual fate. It was nice to be back in her company and the way this story is crafted, with a very small cast, is bloody clever. I continue to marvel how engaging these stories are, I LOVE listening to BF almost as much as I enjoy Who on TV. It is becoming increasingly blurred for me in terms of differences between the two, which is crazy considering we are talking about audio stories. I digress, basically really enjoyed this one and a perfect example of what I am referring to here, the energy and vividness of these awesome audio stories continue to be outstanding.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Weevels – hugely enjoyable, nasty man-monster here and Cardiff shines in this, to some extent anyway. Yvonne is great, scheming, tough but also driven to do the right thing. Sort of. Classic Torhwood.
What I felt: happy I had taken the plunge and started this Torchwood adventure (which is slightly less daunting than other ranges (DW monthly I am looking at you), shorter, snappier stories.
What am I left thinking?
- When will Yvonne return?
- Thus far none of the main cast are actually together in the same audio, what’s all that about?
Memorable bits
- A very dodgy Cardiff mayoral candidate (with a horrible messed up leg thanks to Yvonne)
- Getting pissed up in dodgy Cardiff pubs!
