Context:

I was really looking forward to this one, intrigued by the concept of Cyberman-nazi cross over, although its a very dark concept that needs to be handled sensitively. This is the final Benny box set with Warners alternate Doctor, which is sad as i have grown to love this team. It’s also the final box set, so this part of my Benny adventure is over, which is also sad. It’s been a blast though and they have all been hugely enjoyable.

THE REVIEW

What I thought:

Wow. I have to say this is a bloody brilliant set of stories, with all episodes being extremely strong, innovative and gripping. The whole notion starts well in Wilkommmen, with the Cybermen setting an intelligence trap (great idea) to capture their next set of conversions. The Weimar/caberet stuff is brilliant and Wolf is a brilliant new idea, a part converted Cyber-Wolf going home and the consequences of that. The final two stories show the horrific world of Cyber-Nazi world. Warner is brilliant here, as the pragmatic doctor doing what is needed to defeat these versions of the cybermen, and Benny trying to hold it all together. Brilliant.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Daleks – my first perfect score! I loved this, brilliant stories, one story developing the overall arc further, brilliant performances from all. A brilliant swan song for this series of Benny adventures.

What I felt:

There was definitely sadness when I finished this, but I enjoyed every minute of this listen and this set of episodes. I pretty much listened to all of this in two days (whilst painting a room in the house!) and it was great to have this solid set of time to listen to all of these closely together. Coupled with my interest in this period of history … a perfect combination for me.

What am I left thinking?

• Where this series would have gone should DW have stayed with us…we will never know, but in my head cannon this version of the Doctor is still out there.
• Simply how good Benny and this Doctor were together.

Memorable bits

• Too many to choose from really: the cyberman hybrid doing farm work was a highlight of a room full of highlights!
• Caberet!
